About the Leaky Roof Studio

A question people often ask is, “Why do you call it the Leaky Roof Studio.”

I first exhibited my work in 2006.  It was at an open studio event that brought people into my home studio.  The registration form had a line for the name of the studio.  I figured I had to fill it in.

My wife and I brainstormed many names for my “studio” but came up with nothing we liked.  I literally had only a few hours remaining before the registration deadline and we still had not come up with a good name.

At that time, we had several bad leaks in our aging roof.  During heavy rains, we literally pushed furniture around to avoid it getting wet.  At the last minute, we decided to call the studio the “Leaky Roof.”  We figured it give fair warning to our guests and be a point of conversation if the day of the event was wet.  Fortunately, the weather turned out to be sunny and we no one had to walk across wet towels to look at the art.

We have since fixed the roof, so the Leaky Roof Studio no longer leaks. The name stuck, however, and we’ve kept it since.  We have yet to repaint the damaged ceilings, so for a while there is still proof that the Leaky Roof Studio really leaked.
